Two years ago this month, Eve co-owners Debra Russell and Jill Buchanan created their restaurant’s famous hot bowl after a decade of nostalgic cravings. The dish pays homage to the Capitol Hill juice joint Gravity Bar (open from 1986 to 2005), which was one of Russell’s favorite spots.

The Fremont restaurant scene has been lacking adult-friendly eateries for as long as I can remember. If you’ve seen the transformation from families toting strollers during the day, to college kids (or douche jerk-offs acting like college kids) stumbling out of 9 Mil or Norms during late night weekend hours, you’re probably cringing at the memory.

As for the food—starters, spreads, salads, veggies, and mains—it nails “hippie” more consistently than it does “elevated,” alas, but that’s not a deal breaker for a town that doesn’t offer much else for clean-eating destinations.

There are times you step into a restaurant and immediately sense that something unique awaits. And in a dining scene that’s currently robust, but also often derivative and lazy in menu conception and ambience, Eve Fremont’s originality in both areas is refreshing. And with most of the lauded openings happening on Capitol Hill and in Ballard these days, a jaunt to Fremont was likewise an appreciated diversion.
